An Analogue with Words....

As human beings, we display a lot of love for spoken words. We tend to listen and analyse words spoken to us with more deliberate effort than we think we do! It is definitely a magical world. And oh don't we love playing with them with all our soul!

It is remarkable how sometimes the most simply said words can either lighten or dampen the spirit of listener. Words like “I shall be there" or “I know what you mean" have this magical capacity to fill the listener with love, joy and confidence. If you have ever seen the expressions on a kids face, when it is afraid of dark and is comforted tenderly by its mother in a few spoken words like “I am with you", you would know what it means.  Or from the face of a stressful soul, who lets say has just separated from spouse, a few words from a close friend like” I shall always be there" and” Don't worry, we'll move over" can be a step towards instilling peace and faith, can't they?

While on the other hand, again words like" I don't care" and " It doesn't look promising enough" can dampen the spirit of listener to an extent which sometimes might not be comprehensible from a length. But how grave can be the effect when a person is already going through a rough patch, is understandable. Imagine the inner turbulence of a person whose wife is fighting with an incurable disease, who has to put up a brave face all the time in front of his beloved, and whose boss doesn't approve of any work or idea that this person presents before his boss. Its not difficult to understand how wretched the person will feel in this scenario.

And its not only listening but also speaking out words that interests most of us while in a conversation. People do not make deliberated efforts in selecting words to communicate, whether they are aware of their choices or not. That the subconscious plays an important role while words are directed towards someone cannot be underestimated. Also, mostly, people are able to judge the effect of the words spoken by them as soon as these words are out. But still not many take care to think before they speak.

Leaving aside the people who are engaged in the world of ' word business' like lyricists, writers, theater personalities, media persons or for that matter politicians, all of whom tend to target a larger audience and are therefore very much concerned with the words they let out and also the way, a high percentage of the rest do not take it as essential aspect of everyday communication.

Socrates says that the best life and the life most suited to human beings involved reasoning. But do we always involve ourselves in reasoning when we speak out our minds or when we are listening?

Words are remarkable ways to express oneself. Won't the interactions be compelling if more thinking and reasoning is applied where the process of exchange of thoughts, beliefs, ideas or mere information is concerned.
