Smita Patil: The Original Divas of Bollywood

Smita Patil was an actress who brought about a revolution of sorts in Hindi cinema with her powerful roles.

In her movies, she beautifully blended her sensitive outer frailty with an inner strength to create an experience that would always be unforgettable for movie-goers. Starting her career with ‘arthouse’ cinema, Smita found equal success in 'popular' cinema and had become the favorite of the masses.
Though her journey was short-lived, it was something that would be etched in our minds for years to come. Presenting the life and time of one of the greatest actress of Indian cinema, Smita Patil.
alt

The Beginning

Smita Patil's debut was with the film 'Charandas Chor' in 1974. The movie was directed by Shyam Benegal, who went on to cast her in many of his films making her a champion of art cinema. For the next 5-6 years of her career she devoted herself to 'serious cinema'. Luckily for her, it was a time when the shackles of 'commercial' cinema were being questioned. With her undivided attention to meaningful cinema, Smita, along with Shabana Azmi, Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah, became the faces of the art movement in the country.
alt
Claim to Fame
Smita became a major sensation with her power-packed roles in the above mentioned movies. Filmmakers scrambled to get her to act in their 'commercial' movies, but Smita stubbornly stuck to the kind of cinema that she believed in. The movie 'Bhumika', released in the year 1977 became Smita's tour de force. Directed by Benegal, once again, the movie fetched her the National Award.
It was after a lot of persussion that Smita finally gave in to the growing demand for her in commercial cinema and went on to act in movies like 'Namak Halal' and 'Shakti'.

"I remained committed to small cinema for about five years ... I refused all commercial offers. Around 1977-78, the small cinema movement started picking up and they needed names. I was unceremoniously dropped from a couple of projects. This was a very subtle thing but it affected me a lot. I told myself that here I am and I have not bothered to make money. I have turned down big, commercial offers because of my commitment to small cinema and what have I got in return? If they want names I'll make a name for myself. So I started and took whatever came my way."

alt
The Oomph Factor
Smita Patil's USP was her raw sensuality. She belonged to the 'unconventional' list of actresses along with Shabana Azmi and others, who were being recognized for their sheer talent. Her dusky complexion had many admirers as the country was beginning to break the stereotypical notions of beauty, and Smita Patil was the perfect example of an Indian beauty.
alt
The Calling
Smita was working as a newsreader for Doordarshan when she was discovered by Shyam Benegal. She was also an alumna of the 'Film and Television Institute of India' which has produced some major stars like Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Mahesh Bhatt and John Abraham.
alt
Did You Know?
Smita had a natural flair for photography and was quite accomplished in it and an exhibition of her photographs was held posthumously.
Smita was prematurely born and in the first five years of her life, her health remained extremely fragile with the doctors going so far as to say that she wouldn't survive.
alt
Smita Patil Now
Smita Patil, all of 31, died of childbirth complications in 1986 when her newborn, Prateik, was barely 14 days old. Today, what remains is only her legacy that she has left behind in the form of her films and, of course, her only son. After struggling to deal with the sense of loss that he felt at not having his mother around, Prateik has now reached a comfortable space in life.
Today, he is quite an accomplished actor and is being seen as the worthy successor of his overtly talented mother.
alt
Smita Patil was like the shining star of Bollywood that faded out too soon. In just eleven years of her career, Smita touched unprecedented heights and her exalted status in the industry was something popular actresses could only dream about. She brought an honesty to her roles and this was crucial in making her such an iconic actress. Smita Patil was an actress who was true to herself and created an identity for herself solely through her work and though she has passed away, her life is still celebrated in all its essence.

What a person should exactly be???

During our school days we all have fun but after schooling we come in college and from that a stage of seniority and big phase arises when person should think what he want to be and by what he can achieve that.

Some thinks to be Doctors, Engineers, Journalist, and Business Man and so on. There are n number of field which we can choose and target that to grasp it. Some gets what they want but some don't and that might be due to any of the issue.

After grasping our goals what we should not forget is that we are humans and we have to live a simple life. Some gets ego in themselves and some think themselves to be the "Lion of the Jungle".

According to me person whether he/ she is on any post should be very down to earth and must respect others and should understand others feelings also. There is a very good saying also, person interacts with those who respects others and keep in touch also with them only.

I have been taught a thing in my school life that whether a person is good in studies or not he/ she should be good from heart. Person should be very simple with no show offs loves simplicity and people his nearby.

India opens door to foreign supermarket chains...

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India threw open its $450 billion retail market to global supermarket giants on Thursday, approving its biggest reform in years that may boost sorely needed investment in Asia's third-largest economy.
Trade Minister Anand Sharma said on Friday that the government's new policy to allow foreign supermarkets into the country would create 10 million jobs over three years, while not affecting smaller, domestic retailers.
The world's largest retail group, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, and its rivals see India's retail sector as one of the last frontier markets, where a burgeoning middle-class still shops at local, family-owned merchants.
Allowing foreign retailers to take stakes of up to 51 percent in supermarkets would attract much needed capital from abroad and ultimately help unclog supply bottlenecks that have kept inflation stubbornly close to a double-digit clip.
Wal-Mart hailed the decision, but said it would take a close look at the fine print to see what the decision entails for its ability to do business in India.
"We believe this is an important first step," said Scott Price, president and chief executive of Walmart Asia in a statement.
Raj Jain, who heads Wal-Mart India, told CNBC TV18 the decision will "redefine the way consumers shop in India, but more importantly, the way supply chains in India run."
Under fire for a slow pace of reform, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's embattled government appears to be slowly shaking off a string of corruption scandals to focus on policy changes long desired by investors.
"This is a very bold move and the economic reforms process is back on track." Rajan Mittal, vice chairman of India's Bharti Enterprises, which is Wal-Mart's partner in that market, told reporters.
Millions of small retail traders vigorously oppose competing with foreign giants, potentially providing a lightning rod for criticism of the ruling Congress party ahead of crucial state elections next year.
Food Minister K.V. Thomas said the government will allow foreign direct investment of up to 51 percent in multi-brand retail - as supermarkets are known in India. It will also raise the cap on foreign investment in single-brand retailing to 100 percent from 51 percent, he added.
The new rules may commit supermarkets to strict local sourcing requirements and minimum investment levels aimed at protecting jobs, according to local media.
A heavyweight member of Singh's coalition government warned on Thursday it unequivocally opposed opening the sector.

The move is politically risky.

Fears of potential job losses could heighten popular anger at the Congress party ahead of key state polls next year that will set the stage for the 2014 general election.
But slowing growth and investment in India, with the rupee currency around historical lows and government finances worsening, may have spurred the government into action.
"Manmohan Singh, after all the scams and the impression of government paralysis, has realised it's time to take some bold steps. This is a very bold step that will please the middle class," said political analyst Amulya Ganguli.

Opening up retail to help growth, curb inflation: RBI

CHANDIGARH (Reuters) - India's growth story is still "credible" and the move to open up the economy to global supermarket chains will help growth and control inflation, the central bank governor Duvvuri Subbarao said on Friday.
"It's commendable that government has taken the initiative. Let's hope that it will improve the logistics chain and supply chain management in agriculture," Subbarao said in a speech in the north-western city of Chandigarh.
Late Thursday, the government approved 51 percent foreign direct investment in the supermarket sector, paving the entry of firms such as Wal-Mart , Tesco and Carrefour into one of the world's largest untapped markets.
"It's important for not only raising overall growth but also important for containing inflation and improving quality of life over 50 percent of population," Subbarao said.
Opening up the retail sector to global players has been a much awaited reform but has been long hobbled by political differences. The Congress-led government's biggest ally Trinamool Congress is opposed to the move.
The central bank chief said that inflation needs to be brought down to 5 percent initially and then even lower, consistent with India's integration with global economy.
Subbarao said the current inflation situation is a consequence of both supply shocks and demand pressures.
Monetary tightening needs to be supplemented by supply side measures to raise potential economic output, he said.
"Raising agricultural production and productivity is, important for containing price pressures, raising rural incomes and making growth more inclusive," Subbarao said.
India's inflation, which is largely driven by high food and global commodity prices, plus expansive fiscal policies, is the highest among major economies in Asia. It's wholesale prices rose more than expected in October as the cost of food and fuel increased.
The high inflation print, above 9 percent for the 11th month, was further evidence of the Reserve Bank of India's inability to achieve a breakthrough in its fight against inflation despite 13 rate rises since March 2010.
In its October 25 mid-quarter review of monetary policy, the RBI had said that a rate hike may not be warranted if inflationary pressures start to ease by December.
Slowing growth, stubbornly high inflation, rising interest rates, political gridlock, gloom in the West and a sliding rupee have conspired to dampen investor and corporate sentiment in Asia's third-largest economy.
The RBI has lowered the country's growth forecast to 7.6 percent for the current fiscal year ending in March from 8 percent previously.
Subbarao says a reduction of federal and state fiscal deficits are important steps for a stable macro environment.
India's fiscal deficit during April to September was 2.92 trillion rupees, or 70.8 percent of the full-year target, government data showed. Most expect it to breach the 4.6 percent of GDP target for the fiscal year.
The government said it would sell debt worth 2.2 trillion rupees, sharply above the budgeted 1.67 trillion rupees in the October to March period.
Subbarao said that India being a emerging economy with a partly open capital account, floating exchange rate and a monetary policy that takes into account global developments, has to continue to manage the "impossible trinity."
The impossible trinity refers to the economic hypothesis that a country simultaneously cannot have a fixed exchange rate, an open capital account and an independent monetary policy.
RUPEE VOLATILITY TO REMAIN
The central bank chief said the volatility in the foreign exchange market will remain until the euro zone crisis is resolved.
"Until there is a credible solution to the sovereign debt problem in Europe, we will see movements in the exchange rate," Subbarao said.
He added that the central bank is watching the rupee, but could not say whether it will intervene in the forex market directly.
The rupee has skidded nearly 17 percent from a 2011 high reached in late July as risk-averse investors flee emerging markets, increasing the difficulties for a government already struggling with high inflation, slowing economic growth and a widening trade gap.
The rupee touched an all-time low of 52.73 on Tuesday and state-run banks were spotted selling dollars in the market in recent sessions, sparking talk of RBI intervention.
Wednesday, RBI deputy governor Subir Gokarn said intervention has been aimed at smoothing sharp movements in the rupee.

Too many players eroding Indian democracy??

Too many cook spoil the broth, truly said: well does the same apply to our electioneering process? While the polling activity is on full swing across the nation the question arises are we able to maintain the democracy through cohesive forces in spite of the political fragmentation?
India, where after every 100 kms, dialect changes, need a centralized power combined or moreover synergized of all regional powers. Long gone the days where monolithic congress or BJP were virtually unchallenged brands in India, emergence of various regional parties has diminished the "Dominating effect".
The fungal growth of these parties across the lines has superseded the common mass's interest. the fear is that the proliferation of small parties with regional or personal agendas could spell disaster for India’s national aspirations & goals in term of development & social equity.
Is it the sign of healthy diversity or disastrous divisiveness? do our political system well addresses the nation's needs or they are busy doing homework for self development or rather preparing the list of positioning elements for next elections!!
Moreover our system does not lay out any specification framework regarding qualifications & other personal attributes for these nation's drivers. Unlike corporate where everything you desire requires you to deserve it first on the basis of stringent educational & other factors, these political leaders remain left with list of their forthcoming plans for what they can do after being elected.. i mean if you don't get any job better to go for politics as it does not require you to put in efforts to derive any B.Tech / MBA degree.
Indian politics is another synonym for "Identity politics” a politics of give-and-take, of promises made, sometimes material – sometimes pertaining to jobs and power. But higher principles are entirely absent from such politics. And yet, our politicians couch their rhetoric in the language of principles, fooling only the willfully self-delusional.

We all know that the whole political system is hosted with parasites like crime, corruption they we again vote the same people & expect them to do something different this time??

HIDDEN & LOST ...

with this storm raging up above
standing here all alone
wishing an ocean of down pour
dreaming to get LOST in the abyss unknown

the unknown mystifies me tonight
coz its the only place where i can HIDE

don't know from what
don't even know why

HIDE to get LOST
LOST just to HIDE
LOST in darkness
HIDDEN in light
where light and darkness cease to fight

HIDE from myself and from thee
HIDE from the people and the things we see
HIDE from the usual and the decree
HIDE from the hatred in the love
HIDE from the darkness in the light
HIDE from the lies in the truth
HIDE where winners win and losers lose
HIDE where the one who strives gets the fruit
HIDE in a place where i can get lost

wish getting LOST was so easy
as easy as feeling sad may be
but how the hell do i get LOST ?
in a place where i know all the directions already

then again getting LOST is so easy
as easy as losing yourself in the crowd may be
but how the hell do i get LOST ?
around people who are LOST already

LOST in darkness and in grief
LOST in despair and in disease
LOST in lust and in creed
LOST in winning and in greed
LOST in freedom and in speed
LOST in restriction and in weed
LOST in strife and even in peace
LOST in life without any heed...

the ONLY SORRY I’ve EVER be ...

here i STAND today
FACING you upfront
SOMETHING i had to do
for something i had DONE

yes i KNOW
CRYING is not the way
and i realise this is not FUN
but WHAT can i do
life's been so UNDONE

yes i knew you were RIGHT
yes i knew i was WRONG
up all the WAY through
from the place where WE begun

YES i was wrong
so DAMN what ?
why should i ALWAYS be right ?
in this damn f***ed up WORLD

yeah YEAH yeah
i know what THEY say
they say am CROOKED
but NONETHELESS are they

oh yeah TRUE

that's not WHO i am
and you know this COZ
you ACTUALLY know who i am

i know am not PERFECT
you know neither is GOD
may be thats what the PROBLEM is
may be thats where we LOST

may be i was my WORST enemy
may be i was just SCARED
scared of RESENTMENT
becoming my own DESPAIR

yes i know we didn't PLAN this
then again who can plan LIFE ?
life is always a STRUGGLE
and that's why we call it a FIGHT

belief trust and LOVE
was all you ever SHOWERED
and LOOK what i gave you
being such a COWARD

wish i was STRONGER
when i TRULY needed to be
now that the TIME has past
i have finally become a MAN that is me

dont know what i MEANT to you
DONT even know what i meant to me
all i know is you meant a LOT
although that i FAILED to see

yes i was BLIND
from the beginning till the END
coz what i was truly DOING
was just following a fake TREND

this false PRETENSE i walked with
was what had DRIVEN me blind
NOW that i can see
i am trying to REALIGN

no i don't care if the WORLD's reading
read ALL that i have wrote
just be sure to READ the sorry
that is all what i HOPE

never would have been GLOOMY
never would have even TRIED
but what could i DO
you never CEASE to FLOURISH from my eye

yea i know FORGIVENESS is difficult
yea i know its so HARD
but if there is ANYONE in the world
you are the ONLY one who can try

they say EVERYTHING HAPPENS for a reason
and they say the ultimate REASON is FATE
but fate is an EXCUSE, just to VINDICATE

they say time is the greatest HEALER
they say TIME forgives all
may be thats why you should FORGIVE me
for the sake of the time when we ENTHRALLED

knowing WHO you really are
you really wouldn't CARE
but may be you KNOWING who i really am
might help you forgive my ERR

yeah those were LOUSY excuses
which shouldn't make SENSE at all
but i couldn't find better ALIBIS
to make you COMMEND MY FAULT

An Analogue with Words....

As human beings, we display a lot of love for spoken words. We tend to listen and analyse words spoken to us with more deliberate effort than we think we do! It is definitely a magical world. And oh don't we love playing with them with all our soul!

It is remarkable how sometimes the most simply said words can either lighten or dampen the spirit of listener. Words like “I shall be there" or “I know what you mean" have this magical capacity to fill the listener with love, joy and confidence. If you have ever seen the expressions on a kids face, when it is afraid of dark and is comforted tenderly by its mother in a few spoken words like “I am with you", you would know what it means.  Or from the face of a stressful soul, who lets say has just separated from spouse, a few words from a close friend like” I shall always be there" and” Don't worry, we'll move over" can be a step towards instilling peace and faith, can't they?

While on the other hand, again words like" I don't care" and " It doesn't look promising enough" can dampen the spirit of listener to an extent which sometimes might not be comprehensible from a length. But how grave can be the effect when a person is already going through a rough patch, is understandable. Imagine the inner turbulence of a person whose wife is fighting with an incurable disease, who has to put up a brave face all the time in front of his beloved, and whose boss doesn't approve of any work or idea that this person presents before his boss. Its not difficult to understand how wretched the person will feel in this scenario.

And its not only listening but also speaking out words that interests most of us while in a conversation. People do not make deliberated efforts in selecting words to communicate, whether they are aware of their choices or not. That the subconscious plays an important role while words are directed towards someone cannot be underestimated. Also, mostly, people are able to judge the effect of the words spoken by them as soon as these words are out. But still not many take care to think before they speak.

Leaving aside the people who are engaged in the world of ' word business' like lyricists, writers, theater personalities, media persons or for that matter politicians, all of whom tend to target a larger audience and are therefore very much concerned with the words they let out and also the way, a high percentage of the rest do not take it as essential aspect of everyday communication.

Socrates says that the best life and the life most suited to human beings involved reasoning. But do we always involve ourselves in reasoning when we speak out our minds or when we are listening?

Words are remarkable ways to express oneself. Won't the interactions be compelling if more thinking and reasoning is applied where the process of exchange of thoughts, beliefs, ideas or mere information is concerned.
